Applying to Oxford or Cambridge Universities, UKAny Grade 12 student thinking of applying to Oxford or Cambridge must see me by the end of next week. Note that both are extremely competitive: you should only consider applying if you are achieving 6s and 7s and a minimum of 38 points without bonus points, as well as being fully involved and highly motivated. Both require interviews and often require further entrance tests.

PSC Scholarships
Thursday, 16 April, 5.30 pm in the Glass HallRepresentatives from the Public Service Commission (PSC) will be at SJII to talk about the structure of Public Service, scholarships and career opportunities immediately after the holidays. This talk is open to all students and parents in Grades 11 and 12, but note that only Singapore Citizens and Singapore Permanent Residents are eligible for PSC Scholarships. The University of Queensland will hold an information session focusing on Teaching & Learning, Science & Technology and Engineering & Architecture at the University of Queensland. Durham University, UK, School of Law
Tuesday, 21 April, 6pm, British Council Room 303Mr Tufyal Choudhury, Lecturer and Undergraduate Admissions Tutor at Durham Law School, will hold a presentation on studying undergraduate Law in the UK, followed by a short introduction to Durham University and a question and answer session. Students and parents are welcome to come along to find out more about living and studying in the UK and to enquire about current or future applications to Durham’s LLB programme.
Durham University is continuously ranked in the top ten UK universities, and Durham Law School was recently ranked 4th Law School in the UK in the 2008 RAE. Founded in 1832, Durham University is England’s third oldest university after Oxford and Cambridge.

University of Chicago, Duke University, Wellesley College and Yale University
Friday 24 April, 7 – 9 pm, Raffles Junior College, Lecture Theatre 4, Block B, Level 3, 10 Bishan Street 21 All four universities are amongst the most selective US universities (you need a minimum of 39 points to apply and students who have been accepted to these universities are generally in the 42-45 point range.). Their presentation will focus on admission to highly selective universities in the US as well as the academic offerings and residential life programs at each of the institutions.
Hotel/Hospitality Management
Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne, Switzerland, (www.ehl.edu/eng) is one of the top universities in the world for hotel management. They offer a 4 year Bachelor of Science in International Hospitality Management. The minimum entry requirements for IB Diploma students is approximately 28-30 points, but points alone do not guarantee entry. Mr. Chen from the Student Affairs Department will be at school on Wednesday, April 29 at 1pm. If you are interested in hotel/hospitality management try to attend his talk.
The International College of Hotel Management, Australia, (www.ichm.edu.au) offers a Bachelor’s Degree in International Hotel Management. They also offer scholarships to international students. See the 2009 Prospectus and Scholarship Information on the notice board.
The Institut Paul Bocuse, France, (www.institutpaulbocuse.com) is a Culinary Arts & Hotel Management school that accepts a limited number of students every year. It offers a Bachelors of Science Degree in Culinary Arts Management, as well as a Bachelors of Science Degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management.
