If you have not seen me to discuss subject teacher references please do so as soon as possible. Teachers will not write references if we have not discussed this first. Remember that these references need to be written soon, even if you are applying later, before teachers leave the school and before they forget you!


Scholarship Opportunities
The International College of Hotel Management (www.ichm.edu.au) in Adelaide, Australia offers 3 scholarships for international students. The application for July 2010 and January 2011 is now available. See me if you would like to apply.
ICHM allows you to get a Swiss Hotel Association Diploma as well as a Bachelors Degree. Their newsletter “OnCourse” is on the noticeboard.

Durham University (http://www.dur.ac.uk)
Ms Victoria Donnelly, International Officer at Durham will talk about studying at Durham. Durham University is a highly ranked university and has a collegiate system, with colleges providing residential, social and welfare facilities for their student members, and creating a sense of community for staff and students together. Its academic teaching and research programmes are delivered through departments contained within three broad faculties: Arts and Humanities, Science, and Social Sciences and Health. All students interested in studying in the UK should try to attend this talk.

Swiss School of Tourism (www.ssthalumni.org)
The Swiss School of Tourism, located in Chur, in the Swiss state of Graubünden (which is known as the Holiday Corner of Switzerland”) offers a 4 year Bachelors degree in a traditional-modern Swiss hotel with state-of-the-art infrastructure complemented by well experienced faculty and accredited by prestigious universities worldwide. Santhosh K, an alumni of the SSTH will speak about their programmes.
Students interested in hotel management, the hospitality industry, etc are encouraged to attend.

Loughborough University (www.lboro.ac.uk)
Loughborough was initially known for its sports teams but is now getting increasing recognition for its academic programmes and student satisfaction. It is quickly becoming a very attractive and popular choice. Caroline Wade, International Officer at Loughborough, will speak about their programmes. All students interested in studying in the UK should try to attend this talk.

University of Manchester (www.manchester.ac.uk)
Manchester is the largest university in the UK and has the largest engineering school in the UK. It is a very popular university and aims to be one of the top 25 universities in the world by 2015. Fran Halliwell, Senior International Officer, will speak about the programmes at Manchester. All students interested in studying in the UK should try to attend this talk.

Pomona College, USA (www.pomona.edu)
Thursday, 12 November, 7 – 9 pm, Hilton Hotel, Orchard Road

Pomona College is amongst the most highly selective undergraduate institutions in the US. The Dean of Admissions, Bruce Poch, is amongst the top speakers on US admissions policies and practices. He has written a number of articles on admissions – some are on the notice board along with a description of Pomona and the College Profile for 2009-2010.
Students thinking of applying to the US are strongly encouraged to attend this talk. Parents are invited, registration is not necessary.

UK University Fair

OAL is organizing a UK University Fair with representatives from Loughborough University, University of Leeds, University of Liverpool, University of Southampton as well as representatives from some foundation courses. Other Notices

US College Tours in the June 2010 Holiday
TS College Tours (www.tscollegetours.com) runs tours only for international students in the June holiday visiting universities in the US and Canada. These tours are purposely kept small and spaces are limited so register early if you are interested. In the day you visit universities, in the evening you work on essay writing, practice interviews etc. Dates and details are on their website and the flyer is on the noticeboard. Note that you should not miss school for these tours - do not register for the California tour!


DigiPen December Holiday Workshop
DigiPen Singapore is running an introductory workshop for students interested in learning about video game programming and the video game production process. The workshop will help participants develop and enhance their problem solving and analytical skills, as well as discover the roles of computer programming, mathematics, physics, arts and the integration of these academic topics in game engineering and development. The workshop runs from 30 November to 11 December, 10 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday, and costs S$775.
