Studying in Australia
Grade 12 students who are planning to apply to Australian universities for the February 2010 intake should be narrowing down their list of universities to apply to in the next few weeks. The application process for most courses opens in September.
Besides the university websites, these are good sites:
www.gooduniguide.com.au – this is an excellent place to start with an extensive search facility.
www.unilodge.com.au – information on housing at Australian universities
www.singapore.idp.com – IDP Singapore
www.studyinaustralia.gov.au – official Australian government website on studying in Australia
Remember to check the requirements for the courses you are thinking about applying for carefully –
• Can you apply with predicted grades or do you need to wait until your IB grades are out in January? Is that too late for 2010 entry? Will you have to look at 2011 then?
• Do you need to take any other exams (MCAT, IELTS for example)?
• Are there specific course requirements besides overall IB points?
• What are the costs (Australia is a big country and costs vary a great deal)?
If you are thinking about applying for the July intake rather than February do your research now as well – not all courses have a July intake and some do not accept international students in July.
The Student Visa
Depending on your nationality you may be required to take IELTS, show financial statements etc for your student visa to Australia. Some of the visa requirements can take quite a bit of time and you should research the requirements for your nationality now. Use the Australian Government Department of Immigration website - http://www.immi.gov.au/students/ - go to Student Visa Options – Higher Education – and select your nationality for more information.
Thinking about studying Psychology?
The British Psychological Society website (www.bps.org.uk) has a useful section on Careers and Qualifications. Although much of the specific university information is UK based, a lot of the information on careers is valid anywhere in the world.
Information specific to psychology in Singapore can be found under the Careers section in the Singapore Psychological Society website (www.singaporepsychologicalsociety.org).
Studying Medicine or Dentistry in the UK
If you are thinking about studying medicine or dentistry in the UK you will probably be required to sit the UKCAT. See the document regarding the test on the noticeboard. Note that registration opened on 1 May.
US College Tours
College Visits (www.college-visits.com) is one of many companies that runs tours to US universities in June. If you are interested see their flyer on the noticeboard or their website. Note that the July tours are not in our holidays and you should not miss school for this.
